Every Indian’s heart fills with pride, seeing the National Flag spread out or singing the National Anthem plays. Every time that feeling of seeing the National flag being hosted gives us goose bumps.
India was declared independent in 1947. Today, the nation observes Republic Day with magnificence and pride. Residents of the nation witness the President of India managing the Republic Day Celebrations at Rajpath while millions watching the occasion on television.
26th January brings out the patriot in us, but there are interesting some facts that we don’t know. Here are some of them:
1. The Indian Constitution is the longest Constitution in the world
The Indian constitution is the world’s longest constitution. Earlier, the constitution had 395 articles in 22 parts and 8 schedules. It consists of almost 80,000 words. The Constitution, in its current form (September 2012), consists of a preamble, 25 parts containing 448 articles, 12 schedules, 5 appendices and 100 amendments, the latest of which came into force on 1 August 2015.
2. It took Dr. B.R. Ambedkar 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to draft the constitution
The Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to set up a Draft Constitution for India. The board of trustees took two years, eleven months and eighteen days to finish its noteworthy undertaking of drafting the Constitution for Independent India.
3. On January 26th, 1965, Hindi has declared the national language of India.
In 1965, Our national language was declared. Hindi was declared as our National language.
4. The first Republic Day was celebrated at Rajpath in 1955.
The historic Rajpath has become synonymous with the January 26 parade. The first Republic day parade took place in New Delhi in 1950. Rajendra Prasad was the president at the time.
5. The date 26th was selected as it was the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day (26 January 1950)
26 January was chosen as the Republic day because on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.
6. During the Republic Day parade, a Christian song “Abide With Me” is played and it is considered as one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite songs.

7. Republic Day Celebrations are a 3-day long affair.
